Hearts From a Friend

If you're a facebook addict like I am, you might've noticed that recently you've been given the option to send a gift to someone you're sending birthday wishes to. I was always skeptical, thinking that maybe it's yet another scam, but on my birthday this past week, I got a notice that my friend, Lori Anderson, sent me a birthday gift...jelly beans! I was still skeptical, but filled out my info & lo & behold, guess what came in the mail today?? JELLY BEANS! From Lori Anderson! I'll give a shout out to the company they came from, Sugarfina.com. And they're heart shaped! Now I don't know if I can bring myself to eat them, they're so cute! Thank you Lori for the jelly beans, but even more so for your friendship! <3

Help for Hurricane Sandy Victims

Living in Queens, NY and on Long Island for 33 years, I've lived through and experienced many hurricanes in my lifetime, but none that impacted as many and created the devastation that Hurricane Sandy did. We prepared and got the necessary supplies for several days in preparation for the storm. Got tons of advice from my wonderful Facebook friends too.

Our lights went out around 6PM Monday night, October 29th and they did not come back on until Tues night of the following week. Unlike so many others, fortunately, we did not sustain any property damage. As luck would have it, I had driven home from my mother's house in Queens to vote. Hubby and I were debating if we would return to Queens due to the gas shortage and long lines. As I was returning home from the post office, I got a call that power had been restored. My joy was overshadowed by the images I finally got to see online of the devastation so many others had endured. We lost the contents of our refrigerator and freezer, but many lost their homes and loved ones.

It was just as I signed onto facebook that I saw my son had shared a link from his cousin, Mandy Bickerstaff. We've known her since she was a little girl, but had lost touch. She's now living in NYC. Along with several of her friends, they took it upon themselves to do something! They're providing hot meals, sandwiches, clothing and supplies to those hit the hardest by the storm. They're doing all this is her small apartment in NYC. Her story is so inspirational. I knew I wanted to help in some way, but with the gas shortage and distance between us, I didn't know what to do. Mandy started a blog about their work, UWSLoves. Took me a few days to figure it out. UWS=Upper West Side....lol! She also has a facebook fan page, also called UWSLoves, which I hope you'll check out.

I decided to donate 100% of my bead sales to this wonderful cause. I wanted my money to go to the people directly rather than a big corporation, for obvious reasons and I knew that Mandy would make sure of that. I tallied up my sales total and was surprised and happy to see it add up to $136, which I'll be sending to UWSLoves. This is a very significant number in the Jewish religion. 18 stands for Chai, which is life. So, 136 is double Chai. Serendipity, or as we say in Yiddish, bashert!

I hope you'll find it in your hearts to give as well. Or if anyone has links to anyone in the food services industr, that might be willing to donate any food items that are sorely needed, please contact Mandy. Last week Serene Green, a farm from out east on Long Island donated 300 pounds of produce and through another connection the produce was driven into NYC via Hampton Jitney, who donated their services . She and her friends made some yummy looking dishes to feed those without power. It's so hard to see the images of the destruction! And sadly, there are still many without power that need our help.

What To Do When You Can't Go To Beadfest...

Pin It This past weekend was the weekend that many of my friends went to Beadfest in Philadelphia. Sadly, I wasn't among them. :( I found myself moping around, looking at photos on facebook of all the smiling faces that were there having a blast....but not I! :(

I went to check out my favorite facebook groups to see what people were up to, Creative Bead Chat being one of them. Lo & behold, one of the admins was home as well & was hosting a full day's giveaways donated by group members. I quickly contacted Marla & donated a prize as well. I tell ya, Marla James missed her calling. If this ceramics thing doesn't work out....yeah right! ;-) She really outta become an auctioneer. She started out slow, putting up new giveaways every hour. Then it was every 1/2 hour & before long we were down to new giveaways every 15 minutes. We laughed till we cried. Even though I didn't win anything, it was SO much fun! I had tears rolling down my face reading some of the posts.

A great big thank you to Marla James for making the day so fun for us! She's such a sweetheart and what a talent! She makes beautiful ceramic beads and pendants. I'm fortunate to own 1 of her creations. This lovely pendant with the adorable heart shaped loop. Please check out her links below to see more of her beautiful work.

Check out my new banners!!!

I am SO challenged when it comes to banners, but thanks to a good friend, Scott Bjorge, an amazing graphic designer and jewelry artist, I finally have banners for my Etsy shop, my ArtFire bead shop and my ArtFire Destash shop. I won't bore you with them all here, but feel free to click on my links to see his work.

Scott was amazing to work with. I gave him a general idea of what I wanted and he was able to hone in on the look that I was going for. Actually his banners give such a professional look to my shops that I'm not sure my beads will live to them. And did I mention that he also designed new business cards for me??

You can contact Scott on Facebook or message me here, on Facebook or any of my shops if you want more info.

Scott, thank you, thank you, thank you! You're an amazing artist and friend!

Tuesday's Treasures - Essensu

I first 'met' (virtually, that is) Tami Abiuso of Essensu on Plurk. She has great insight and has an amazing skin care product line! You can practically smell the luscious scents through the monitor! My mouth is watering from that second photo!

Let's get to know Tami better......

1. If there’s one thing that defines you, what is it?
What a great question and not so easy to answer I might add. I'm not sure how those who know me would answer this, but for myself, what defines me, is my inner desire and search for the inspiration available to us in each new day. Making sure I'm being attentive and grateful for everything in my life. Everyday, I'm grateful to be able to share in the splendor of Mother Nature's abundance, which in turn, drives me to live passionately. Perhaps, living passionately is what defines me.

2. What role does your family play in your art?
They certainly enjoy being able to test my new skin care formulas before they hit the market, and are always eager to give their feedback. However, I'm also a writer and they encourage me to continue to write and make time for it.

3. Where do you live and what is it like?
Actually, I live in a town voted as one of the Top 100 best places to live! Indeed it is. My home itself is on the woods, which is filled with wild turkeys, deer, bunnies, red fox, owls, a rare woodpecker and all the other small animals common to wood areas. We have a chipmunk family living in the step on our deck. I enjoy watching them flit about and they come up to the windows to say hi.

Our town itself was settled along a canal and we have a wonderful bike trail connecting our town to all the surrounding towns. I enjoy taking long bike rides and running along it. The area is bustling in the summertime, with plenty of eateries and ice cream parlor right on the canal. The town sponsors many activities like outdoor jazz nights, car "shows" with cookouts, craft weekends, etc. all back-dropped by our scenic canal.

4. Where did you learn to craft or are you self taught?
I've been an herbalist for over 25 years, and enjoy dong medical research. These two passions combined when I became aware of skin and body care products having unfriendly ingredients for our skin and our environment. As I looked for an herbal solution for bug bites for instance, I learned what essential oils to include in a skin cream to help alleviate the itching. Deciding to create a natural skincare line was a natural progression for me. I do often consult with industry professionals when deciding on a particular formula, and all are rigorously tested before being introduced to the line.

5. How long have you been working at your craft?
I began my actual skincare line in 2003.

6. Where do you receive your inspiration, in general?
Nature of course. Even with my writing, nature always inspires me. I'm awed by the magnificence of its perfection and power.

7. What is the best piece of advice you can give other artists?
Follow your heart or gut feeling. When you get that "ah ha" feeling, you know you have something. But the process getting there should be enjoyed as well. I believe if you follow your passions, whatever they are, you won't spend much time on the wrong path. Our inner guide is our inspiration. Get inspired, and be inspired. Then share your inspiration.

8. If you won a thousand dollar craft shopping spree, what would you spend it on?
I'm drawn to bottles and jars and lids and caps for my products. I love thinking about new packaging and the look of my line. I also have a personal desire to help battered woman and their children. We have a woman's shelter which is always in need of shampoo and soap, etc. I'd be inclined to use the money to fund as many bottles as I could fill with product, to donate to them. It wouldn't fill the need for supplies indefinitely, but it would provide a positive contribution to a very real need in the community, if even short term.
What an inspiration! Here are some links where you can find Tami's wonderful products:
